Key points

Google announced the Fitbit Edge, a $179.99 fitness tracker with a hybrid OLED display, launching 27 October 2026.

Google announced the Fitbit Edge on 12 October 2026, a $179.99 fitness tracker positioned between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. The device combines the Air's slim band with a hybrid OLED display for notifications, weather, music controls and map directions. Pre-orders opened the same day through the Google Store, with retail availability set for 27 October 2026.

The Edge exists because many people want something between an advanced smartwatch like the Pixel Watch and a quiet, screenless band like the Fitbit Air, according to Google's own product blog. It runs a redesigned Fitbit OS rather than Wear OS, borrowing the Pixel Watch's widget and interface design language while keeping a slimmer profile. The case measures 11.5mm thin and is 45% lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12.

A tracker between two Google devices

Google says the Edge's built-in precision GPS is up to 40% more accurate than previous generations, even without a phone. The company attributes this to an upgraded GPS chipset and nano-molded aluminium housing technology. Sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than on earlier generations, Google says, which should improve sleep summaries and coaching tips.

The Edge automatically recognises and logs up to 100 activities, using movement context to infer what the wearer is doing. It pulls in location data and routines, so a logged tennis court visit or a regular Tuesday morning yoga session is inferred as that activity.

Battery life is rated at up to seven days on a single charge with always-on display disabled, dropping to two days when always-on is enabled, according to both The Verge and ZDNET. A five-minute charge provides about a day of use, and a full charge takes 90 minutes. The device is water-resistant to 50 meters and rated IP68.

Where the accuracy claims come from

The Edge carries an electrocardiogram (EKG) sensor for atrial fibrillation detection, a skin temperature sensor, SpO2 and optical heart rate sensors, plus motion tracking sensors. It supports Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, which builds weekly routines from fitness, health and medical information and adjusts them around the wearer's schedule. A Google Health Premium subscription is required; the price includes three months.

Google's Health Guardian feature, announced at the Pixel Watch 5 launch in August, spots notable changes in health measurements over time, including indicators related to blood pressure and insulin resistance. The Edge will receive the same Google Health software updates for blood pressure trends and insulin resistance levels. The device also supports heart rate broadcasting to certain gym equipment.

Several hardware features are absent. The Edge has no microphone or speaker, so calls cannot be taken from the wrist, though the caller's identity appears on screen. It also lacks an NFC chip for contactless payments, unlike the Charge 6 it replaces. ZDNET's Nina Raemont questioned whether sleep tracking accuracy and repairability justify the $20 price increase over the Charge 6.

What the Edge leaves out

ZDNET also raised doubts about the value against the Fitbit Air, which costs $100 and lasts seven days, compared with two days for the Edge with always-on display enabled. Raemont wrote she was skeptical the added screen would justify the $80 price difference. The Edge is Google's first repairable Fitbit.

The Edge launches with several strap types, including metal links and mesh for a jewellery-like look. Colour choices include Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon, with a Stephen Curry Special Edition priced at $219.99. The Fitbit Air is also getting a metal mesh strap at $69.99, available 27 October. Pre-orders for the Fitbit Edge are open now through the Google Store at $179.99, with the device available everywhere on 27 October 2026. The launch fills the gap between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5 as Google expands its wearable lineup for buyers who want glanceable information without a full smartwatch.
